Jersey barrier rental for NYC job sites

A Jersey barrier is a modular barrier with a sloped base, traditionally precast concrete. Some crews call the concrete version K-rail. Century 21 Contracting Corp rents Jersey barriers for work zones, excavations and vehicle access.

Three jobs need them:

  • Work zones beside traffic. General contractors and superintendents separate crews and equipment from moving vehicles.
  • Open ground and loading areas. Owners and facility managers keep vehicles away from an excavation, a lot or a loading area.
  • Full site setups. Contractors who already use our scaffolding, sheds or fencing add barriers to the same job.

Where Jersey barriers go on a site

Here are the common placements and what the barrier does in each.

Job What the Barrier Does
Work Zone Beside Traffic Separates crews and equipment from moving vehicles.
Open Excavation Marks the edge and blocks vehicles from reaching it.
Pedestrian Walkway Splits a protected path from the work area.
Loading Area or Construction Entrance Channels trucks to a single opening.
Lot or Building Frontage Blocks vehicles from driving onto the site.

Barriers handle the vehicle side of site protection. A fence handles the perimeter and the access side. Most sites with traffic nearby need both, so see our temporary construction fencing service.

Do Jersey barriers on the street need a DOT permit?

Usually, but the exact permit depends on where the barriers go and the work involved.

NYC DOT requires a permit for many activities that place materials, equipment or temporary structures on a street or sidewalk, and lists closing a sidewalk or roadway separately. Jersey barriers aren’t named on that list, so confirm your case with DOT or your permit expediter. We’ll help you map the barrier layout to what DOT will ask for.

DOT permits generally go to the contractors and developers who do the work. They apply and pay online through NYCStreets. When barriers sit in the roadway, DOT’s Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) guidelines shape the layout. They exist to give workers a safe work area within the roadway.

Where the Barriers Go Permit Considerations
Sidewalk A DOT permit may be needed for equipment on the sidewalk, depending on placement and work activity. Closing the sidewalk is a separate DOT-listed activity.
Roadway A DOT permit may be needed for equipment on the street, depending on placement and work activity. MPT guidelines can shape the layout.
Inside Your Property Line Outside DOT’s street and sidewalk permits; other rules (such as DOB site safety) may still apply.

Barriers with fencing, scaffolding and sheds

One contractor can plan your barriers, fence, shed and scaffold together.

Most jobs that need barriers also need a fence, a shed or a scaffold. A sidewalk shed or scaffold whose footings and barrier reach past the curb into the roadway needs its own DOT permit, so ask us to plan the barrier line and the shed together.

Past scaffold and shed work includes a suspended scaffold at 2155 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd in Harlem (2017) and a sidewalk shed at 303 Powell Street in Brooklyn (2023). Both are scaffold and shed jobs, not barrier jobs.

FAQs

Usually. DOT permits cover many street and sidewalk activities, but its list doesn’t name Jersey barriers, so confirm for your exact placement. Contractors and developers apply through NYCStreets. Barriers inside your property line sit outside DOT’s street permits, though other requirements may still apply.

Yes. We deliver them, place them where your site plan puts them, move them as the job changes and pick them up when the work ends. Details are confirmed in your quote.

Ratings belong to specific tested barrier models, and they come with the manufacturer’s test documentation. We make no rating claims on this page. Ask for the documents on any barrier you plan to rely on against vehicles.

We serve all five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Our office is in the Bronx.

Generally no. Building Code section 3307.7 requires a solid fence at least 8 feet high around sites where a new building is being constructed or a building is being demolished to grade, with limited exceptions the DOB commissioner may approve. A barrier separates vehicles rather than enclosing the site. Use barriers for the vehicle side and fencing for the perimeter, and confirm your job’s fence requirements with DOB or your filing professional.

We carry $2M general liability, and the insurance certificate comes with every quote. We also hold a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license, which covers our residential improvement work.
